Calvan Fowler & Daydream Filmworks

Hello sneaker fanatics, this week I got a chance to do an exclusive interview with Daydream Film works Filmmaker Calvan Fowler. Our basis of the conversation was on his Documentary Film Jordan Heads which will is soon to be released in the later part of this year. Calvan whom has
worked with the greats like Spike Lee as well as choreographed a Michael Jackson video has a vision for the art of sneaker collecting. When asked about what enticed him to do a documentary film on those that are true Jordan sneaker collectors Calvan expressed that he began to notice a
large genre of people of all ages were wearing Jordan sneakers and saw a niche for shooting a film on it.

Similar to us here at MoSneaks we have noticed the sub-culture of sneaker collectors and what they will do to have any particular shoe. On the note of dealing with prospective individuals for the film we asked Mr. Fowler how did he deal with egos and emotions that these individuals
had? Clearly stated, Calvan expressed that for the most part he is glad that he didn’t have to deal with anyone that had an ego on this sub-culture. As for emotions and dealing with them, not too many of them were negative or derogatory more like on a positive yet sad to be heard but happy to be seen. Many of them became emotional when it came down to expressing how they felt about a specific shoe, but I would describe it as great footage.

On the topic of making negotiations, we had to ask him what type of negotiations or deals would he work out with those that are expressing their love for sneakers in the film.

CF: When I have to negotiate with those that I will have in the film, it is easy for the most part. I say this because this film being more of a documentary all of its participants are not in it for money and most are more willing to share their love for the sneaker at no monetary cost at all.

MS: How has shooting this documentary impacted how you think about sneaker collectors?

CF: Before I thought that people were following a trend but there are a lot of personal and amazing stories that make me think otherwise. And the journey in shooting this film showed me that.

MS: If you could have done something differently with the documentary, would you have changed anything?

CF: They only thing that I can say that I don’t regret but would have done sooner was edit the film as I went along as opposed to shooting it all and then trying to edit the footage. There is just so much footage from across the globe and people still want me to shoot their stories.

MS: So in negotiating this film for the bigger film market what if any barriers did you run into?

CF: Well as far as the film and network negotiations I have had a few companies as well as investors throw up numbers. MTV wanted to negotiate a deal whereas they would own the rights to the film and break it up into a mini series on one of their stations. In the beginning yeah it sounds great but you have to look at the big picture here. Myself being the creative part of this film and having a network almost take that away from me just wasn’t cutting it. We have sat at the round table a couple of times before the right deal was set for this film and its release. Initially we were suppose to release it back in 06’ but here we are in 2011 and things
are finally coming to terms. So negotiations, well the right negotiations can take time for the better, because the deal that I currently worked out helps me as a filmmaker and my company as a brand.

Filmmakers like Calvan, are an inspiration for us and what we do here at MoSneaks, once we get our show up and running we are sure that you as the viewers will love how we cover true sneaker collectors and their passion.
